Harriman State Park is an exceptional place, and there’s a wealth of resources out there to help you learn more.
1. If you really want to dig deep, pay a visit to the Visitor Center and Book Store, on the Palisades Parkway between Exits 16 and 17 (accessible from both directions). I’ve never seen a more comprehensive, complete collection of information, in all forms, on Harriman, the Hudson River Valley, and the surrounding parks of the Palisades. (You can also pick up a bear bell!)
A few other things you can pick up: fire starter tape, bug spray, playing cards with survival tips, a package of trail mix, and a book about identifying road kill — for real. I love that place. Nice ladies behind the counter, too.
